Official Bicycle Parade T-shirts Revealed
The official 2011 Bicycle Parade T-shirt – which can be worn by bicyclists in the record-setting event – was revealed today by the Bicycle Parade Committee. “The shirt is a deep blue and is imprinted in white with the official oval logo of our event,” announced Bicycle Parade Committee member Jennifer Dath. “It’s available for purchase at the time folks register on line to ride in the parade – and the proceeds from T-shirt sales will go to the Davis schools.
In 2010, the City of Davis, led by the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, set a Guinness World record in the category of “longest single line of bicycles” with 916 moving bikes in a line. The Odd Fellows have announced an effort to break the Davis record in 2011, on October 2, beginning precisely at 10:02 a.m.
“This year,” said Bicycle Parade spokesman Dave Rosenberg, “we intend to break the record with over 1,200 moving bikes in a line. The route has been lengthened to almost four miles to accommodate more bicyclists.”
Registration is open to the public. “We’re in our last weeks of registration for the parade,” said Rosenberg. “Folks can’t ride in the parade unless registered ahead of time.”
Folks who wish to register to ride in the parade and help set a new World Record for Davis must do so on line. Families are welcome to register, but riders must be a minimum of 7 years of age. Registration this year will remain open for only the first 1,500 bike riders. At 1,500 registrants, registration will close as the route will not be able to accommodate more riders.
Bicycle riders can register for the 2011 bike parade at http://worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com/registration/. Members of the public can also sign up as a volunteer to help out on the days leading up to the parade or on parade day at http://worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com/volunteer/. Bike parade rules – established by Guinness World records – can be accessed and reviewed at http://worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com/parade-rules/.
Registration on line takes just minutes, and one member of a family can sign up the entire family at one time. Cost to register for the parade is $10 per person. If registrants wish to have the commemorative bike parade logo T-shirt, the cost will be $20 for registration and the T-shirt. All proceeds from registration, after expenses, will be given to the Davis Schools Foundation for the benefit of Davis schools.
The parade will be followed by a family-friendly Festival in Central Park, complete with a food court with various local restaurants, a beer garden featuring Sudwerk beer on tap, a coffee shop, local musical entertainment, and a “Kid’s Zone” featuring bounce houses. A new element this year is geared for teenagers – a large mobile van called “Gizmo’s Rolling Video Games”. The Festival in Central Park will begin around 11 a.m. and is open to the bike riders and the entire community.

Bicycle Parade Committee Releases 2011 Rules of the Road
The Bicycle Parade Committee has released the 2011 “Rules of the Road for riders in the effort to break the Guinness World Record for longest single line of bicycles in motion. The record was set by the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge in 2010 at 916 bikes. The effort this year hopes to have over 1,200 bikes in a single line
“This is a Guinness World Record, so we have to follow Guinness World Record Rules,” said Bicycle Parade Committee spokesman Dave Rosenberg. “Our goals are to follow the rules, set a record, be safe and have fun, not necessarily in that order.”
The 2011 Rules of the Road follow:
1. Please be on time. The parade starts at 10:02 a.m. sharp on October 2, in front of the Odd Fellows Hall at 415 Second Street. We ask that you and your bike arrive in the downtown staging area between 8 and 9 a.m. We will have over 1,200 riders and the staging area is pretty large.
2. Follow the bike in front of you. We must proceed in a single line of bikes. So you will cross the starting line, follow the course which will be almost 4 miles in length, and finish back where you started. To set the record, all bikes must be moving. To count toward the record, your bike must cross the start line, traverse the entire route, and must cross the finish line. There will be 3 lead riders (including the Mayor of Davis and the Noble Grand of the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge) who will start the parade and will set a comfortable pace. All you really have to do is follow the bike in front of you.
3. The Guinness rules require that there not be any significant gaps in the single line of bikes. A significant gap is defined as more than two bike lengths between bikes. We recommend that you stay within one bike length of the bike in front of you. In other words, do your best to keep a six-foot distance between you and the bike in front of you. In no event should you allow more than a two-bike-length distance (12-foot gap) between you and the bike in front of you. So, please keep it tight and keep it safe.
4. To set the record, we must proceed in a single line. If, during the bicycle parade you experience a personal problem or a problem with your bike, please call up the bike rider behind you to fill in your space and you may drop out of the parade. If you drop out, of course, you will not be counted toward the record, but you may continue to ride along to the side of the single line if you wish. Once you have dropped out, please do not interfere with the single line of bikes. And you can’t “drop back” in.
5. A “bicycle” for purposes of the Guinness record is defined as a two-wheeled vehicle powered by human pedal power. Bikes with training wheels, unicycles, tricycles and the like do not count. Tandem bikes do count – and even though they have two riders, they only count as one bike for purposes of the record. If because of physical condition, disability or otherwise you require a special bicycle (even one with more than 2 wheels), we have arranged with Guinness that you may ride in the parade and you will be counted. Children 7 and older may participate but all minors must wear proper helmets. Adults are encouraged to wear proper helmets, as well. No one may ride in the parade who hasn’t registered at www.WorldsGreatestBicycleParade.com.

Early Registrations Show Diverse Group of Riders
Early registrations show a diverse group of folks signing up for the community effort to break a Guinness World Record for “longest single line of bicycles in motion.”
Bicycle Parade Committee spokesman Dave Rosenberg said, “It’s early and we have almost two months to go, but early registrations for the bike parade are revealing. We’re drawing riders from a wide area.”
Rosenberg said that riders come from communities throughout California including Arcata, Roseville, Modesto, Carmichael, San Jose, West Sacramento, and Santa Rosa. “The majority of riders come from Davis, but in second place are Woodland bicyclists, followed by Sacramento.” Males and females have registered in almost equal numbers. The oldest rider is 79 and the youngest is 7. “The rider traveling the farthest is a person signed up from North Carolina.”

2011 Bicycle Parade “Logo” Unveiled
The “Bicycle Parade Committee” today unveiled the logo for the 2011 effort to shatter the Guinness World Record for the “longest single line of bicycles”.
“The historic logo we used in 2010 to set a world record will ride again in 2011. The logo was so popular last year, that it’s become our ‘brand’ so, by popular demand – it’s back,” said Committee spokesman Dave Rosenberg. “The logo evokes the image of a good old-fashioned community festival, and ultimately, that’s what it is.”
The logo will be emblazoned on the front of commemorative Bike Parade T-shirts that can be ordered on line.
In 2010, the City of Davis, led by the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, set a Guinness World record in the category of “longest single line of bicycles” with 916 moving bikes in a line. Bikes will then turn west (right) on 8th Street and ride on 8th Street toward Anderson Road. Bikes will make a U-turn just before the 8th and Anderson intersection and proceed back down 8th Street heading east toward F Street. Unique Bicycle Parade Website is Chock Full of Information
“Folks have already paid two thousand visits to the unique web site we’ve created for the 2011 World’s Greatest Bicycle Parade,” said Bike Committee spokesman Dave Rosenberg today. “The website contains everything you need to know about the parade, except instructions on how to peddle your bike.”
The Davis Odd Fellows Lodge is leading an effort to break the Guinness World Record for “longest single line of bicycles.” The record was set last October and stands at 916 bikes in a row. This year’s effort will occur in Downtown Davis on October 2. All proceeds from the event benefit the Davis schools.
Abaton Consulting, owned by Bike Committee member Stewart Savage, has created the website which can be accessed at http://worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com. The site is available for folks to register to ride in the parade and purchase a commemorative T-shirt, to volunteer to help out prior to and during the parade, to be a sponsor of the parade, and to answer virtually every question about the record-setting event. Photos and a video of last year’s record-setting parade are also available for viewing on the site.
Abaton Consulting has donated the site and all the work of webmaster to the site maintenance. The company provides technology management, website design, social media support and management, and professional development services to small business and non-profit organizations. “The focus of Abaton Consulting,” said Stewart, “is to help businesses achieve greater results through the effective management of technology and social media resources.”
According to Stewart, “Abaton” is a mythical city mentioned in Thomas Bullfinch’s “My Heart is in the Highlands” Edinburgh 1872. Abaton Consulting uses the name as a metaphor for the changes taking place in technology.
“This is an exciting project,” said Stewart about the bike parade. “The World’s Greatest Bicycle Parade presents a wonderful opportunity to merge traditional fundraising practices with social media. By created a comprehensive communications strategy that integrates newspaper advertising, posters and signage, a website, a Facebook Page, a Twitter feed, and e-mail we are able to raise awareness of this event and engage people locally, regionally, and from around the world. In the last month alone, our website had visitors from 33 different countries. Our Facebook page had fans from 19 different countries. And we expect dramatically increased traffic to our website and Facebook page in the next two months.”
Folks who wish to register to ride in the parade and help set a new World Record for Davis can now do so. “Pacers” for the Bike Parade Announced
The “Bicycle Parade Committee” today announced the names of the three “pacers” who will set the pace and lead the effort to shatter the Guinness World record for the “longest single line of bicycles”.
“We are pleased to announce the three bike riders who will lead the parade and set the pace for our record-breaking event on October 2,” said Committee spokesman Dave Rosenberg.
The three pacers are Davis Mayor Joe Krovoza, Davis Odd Fellows Lodge Noble Grand Dave Reed, and one of last year’s pacers and Odd Fellow Stella Ruiz. In 2010, the City of Davis, led by the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, set a Guinness World record in the category of “longest single line of bicycles” with 916 moving bikes in a line. The Odd Fellows have announced an effort to break the Davis record in 2011.
“This year,” said Rosenberg, “we will break the record with over 1,200 moving bikes in a line. We’ve lengthened the route to accommodate more bicyclists.”
Official witnesses for Guinness World Records are former Davis Mayors Ruth Asmundson and Maynard Skinner.
This year’s bike parade will be held on Sunday, October 2, and will begin at precisely 10:02 a.m.
The tentative bike parade route will begin and end in front of the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge Hall on 415 2nd Street in Downtown Davis. The staging area for bikes and riders will be to the west of the Lodge Hall. Bikes will proceed from the staging area across the starting line and head east on 2nd Street toward F Street, turn north (left) on F Street and will ride up the 14th Street, making a U-turn just before the F and 14th intersection, riding south on F Street till 8th Street. Bikes will then turn west (right) on 8th Street and ride on 8th Street toward Anderson Road. Tentative Bike Parade Route Announced
The “Bicycle Parade Committee” today announced the tentative route to set another Guinness World record for the “longest single line of bicycles”. The planned route is still tentative, pending approval and permits by the City of Davis. In 2010, the City of Davis, led by the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, set a Guinness World Record in this category. The Odd Fellows have announced an effort to break the Davis record in 2011.
“This route is just under 4 miles in length and will accommodate between 1,200 and 1,500 bike riders,” said Bicycle Parade spokesman Dave Rosenberg. “Last year’s world record was 916 bikes, but was limited due to a shorter route. We’ve lengthened the route, and think we have a great shot at setting a new record.”
This year’s bike parade will be held on Sunday, October 2, and will begin at precisely 10:02 a.m.
The bike parade route will begin and end in front of the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge Hall on 415 2nd Street in Downtown Davis. Bikes will make a U-turn just before the 8th and Anderson intersection and proceed back down 8th Street heading east toward F Street. Bikes will turn south (right) on F Street and head back to 2nd Street, where they will turn west (right) on 2nd Street back to the finish line in front of 415 2nd Street.
